Position Summary

Honoré Farm and Mill (HFM) seeks a School Food & Market Development Lead (SFMDL) to support the expansion of California-grown whole grains across Child Nutrition Programs (CNPs) while also helping grow broader commercial markets for Honoré Hourani wheat products. This position serves as the primary liaison between HFM, school districts, farmers, co-packers, bakeries, distributors, and community partners.

The SFMDL will lead implementation of HFM’s USDA Farm to School grant activities, including school procurement support, educational programming, technical assistance, taste tests, and partnership coordination. In addition, the position will advance HFM’s long-term market development strategy by expanding sales and visibility of Honoré Hourani wheat products within bakery, restaurant, retail, and wholesale channels. The role will also help deliver HFM’s hands-on educational and community engagement activities, including school visits, mobile mill demonstrations, workshops, and public events. 

This is a collaborative, relationship-driven role ideal for someone passionate about regional food systems, school food transformation, agricultural education, and market development.

Part-Time | Approx. 0.55–0.65 FTE 

USDA Grant-Funded Responsibilities: Farm to School & CNP Activities 

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate procurement efforts with participating CNP sites, including ordering, product distribution, and menu integration of Honoré Hourani wheat products

  • Organize, manage, and document student taste tests and staff evaluations of whole-grain products

  • Support agricultural education activities, including cafeteria demonstrations, technical assistance visits, and participation in the Annual Wheat Summit

  • Coordinate recipe testing and product evaluation to improve the performance and acceptance of Honoré Hourani wheat products in school meal programs

  • Provide hands-on culinary training and technical assistance to school food service staff on handling, baking with whole grains, recipe adaptation, and successful integration of Honoré Hourani wheat products into school menus

  • Maintain relationships with partner farmers, co-packers, distributors, school districts, and community organizations

  • Track project indicators, collect data, and support monitoring, evaluation, and USDA grant reporting

  • Represent HFM at meetings, trainings, conferences, and peer learning events

Non-Grant Funded Responsibilities: Commercial Development & Market Expansion 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support expansion of Honoré Hourani wheat products into commercial and retail markets

  • Build and maintain relationships with commercial buyers and regional food businesses

  • Assist with outreach, communications, and marketing activities that support product visibility and sales

  • Plan, coordinate, and participate in school, community, and public events, including educational programs, workshops, mobile mill demonstrations, and conferences

  • Identify partnership opportunities that strengthen long-term market sustainability for regional grains

  • Support sales growth and distribution strategies beyond CNP channels

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area

  • Knowledge of Child Nutrition Programs, farm-to-school practices, and school food operations

  • Understanding of local procurement systems, food distribution, and regional agricultural supply chains

  • Knowledge of whole-grain baking principles and the functional characteristics of stone-milled flours, or the ability to work effectively with culinary professionals to support product development and recipe success

  • Strong communication, relationship-building, networking, and partnership-development skills

  • Ability to support outreach, product promotion, and market development across school and commercial food sectors

  • Experience engaging with bakeries, restaurants, distributors, retailers, and institutional food buyers

  • Ability to lead trainings, coordinate events, and facilitate peer learning

  • Competence in data collection, documentation, project tracking, and grant reporting

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple timelines and stakeholders

  • Experience working in school cafeterias, classrooms, farms, production facilities, and community events

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regionally

Required Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, food systems, agriculture, public health, education, marketing, business development, or a related field preferred; OR equivalent professional experience in school food service, farm to school, food systems, nonprofit program coordination, or food sales and distribution.

Experience working with K–12 school districts, CNPs, regional food businesses, or local procurement initiatives strongly preferred.

Experience in baking, culinary education, recipe development, or grain-based food production is highly desirable.

Compensation / Benefits

Hourly rate, paid monthly, $35-$40 per hour, depending on experience
