I'm passionate about teaching children about the miracle of growing healthy and delicious food. In our local community, we run an afterschool program called Wheat Wednesdays at the Martin Luther King School in Marin City, CA. We recently made a 3 minute film depicting this program and how we teach the progresson from seed to loaf as well as planting, harvesting, threshing, winnowing, milling and baking with our very own wheat. Wheat Wednesdays
Education about wheat is important because processed white flour makes up the majority of most American’s diet. According to the USDA we consume, on average, 120 pounds per year. White flour contributes to four main chronic illnesses: diabetes, obesity, heart disease and colon cancer. Wheat Wednesdays educates low income children about the source of their food and the positive health benefits of eating nutritious foods made with whole wheat. We tell each other what we're grateful for each week, building connection while also building knowledge.
We're looking for a small grant of $2,500 to continue this program. If you know of someone who might be interested, please send this link to them. Thanks!
